Southwest Chicken Barley Soup

Southwest Chicken Barley Soup | Cooking on the Front Burner

I'm so excited that we are heading into March and this is the last weekend of February!  That means spring is around the corner, the robins will return, the snow will (and is) melting, and the days are getting longer.  In fact tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 50's.  It will feel great and I'm sure I'll see some Minnesotans walking around in shorts, crazy right!  Even though it will be warming up, I still like a meal of soup every week.  So today I'm sharing this Southwest Chicken Barley Soup.  It is chocked full of great ingredients, comforting and makes a complete meal.  How does a bowl sound to you?

Apple Almond Poppy Seed Salad

Apple Almond Poppy Seed Salad | Cooking on the Front Burner

Get ready to have your socks knocked off this this Apple Almond Poppy Seed Salad.  This salad has it all and I had a really hard time coming up with its name since as you can see it has apples, glazed almonds, poppy seed dressing along with red onions, bleu cheese, mandarin oranges, celery, pasta and oh ya the lettuce it is all nestled in!  Lots of ingredients, lots of flavor and not lots of leftovers!  And the prep part you may ask is only about 15 minutes to get this beauty on the table.  Grab a fork and dig into this amazing salad.  Your taste buds will not know what hit them. (And if you think of a better name, let me know!)

Quick Mushroom Orzo Pasta

Quick Mushroom Orzo Pasta | Cooking on the Front Burner

I'm always on the search for some side dishes that come together quick and on the flavorful side.  This dish has some of my favorites - baby bellas, orzo pasta, thyme and a splash of wine!  From start to finish this Quick Mushroom Orzo Pasta can be on your table in under 30 minutes.  How's that for easy?  Just saute some chicken and add a side vegetable and your entire dinner can be ready in that time too!  Because having a quick dinner means you have time to do other stuff you love especially if you get help on clean up detail :)

Southwest Cheese Ball Appetizer

Southwest Cheese Ball | Cooking on the Front Burner

Are you feeling a bit withdrawn from watching football and munching on some appetizers?  Yes, sadly for some, football season is and I think there is only bowling on TV on Sunday afternoons or re-runs of Pirates of the Caribbean, probably some chick flicks and or course, there is always HGTV.  Or in my case, I'm probably watching reruns of Law & Order SVU for the umpteenth time!  (The DIY Guy always jokes that maybe it will turn out different this time.)  Well, even though you might not be munching much on Sunday afternoons, you may have an occasion where you need to bring an appetizer somewhere.  That is why I'm sharing this Southwest Cheese Ball.   In fact, we did have a place where I needed to bring an appetizer and....

Easy Pear & Sweet Potato Soup

Easy Pear & Sweet Potato Soup | Cooking on the Front Burner

It's no secret that I love soup - all kinds, all ways, meat, meatless, slow cooker, etc - just as long as it doesn't have fish or tofu in it :)  I recently came across this recipe that really intrigued me.  Pears and sweet potatoes - it was a combination I haven't thought of before and eager to give it a try.  Not only is this super easy to make but it looks really elegant and like you fussed all day! It's a bit sweet, a bit savory but FULL of fantastic flavor.  Who's ready to grab a spoon and dig in with this Easy Pear & Sweet Potato Soup?

King Cake Donuts

Baked King Cake Donuts | Cooking on the Front Burner

Time flies and I can hardly believe that it is February.  It kind of snuck up on me!  Things I like about this month are:  winter is getting shorter, the days are getting longer, Valentine's Day is around the corner and Fat Tuesday is coming up.  It's time to have those last sweet indulgences before the season of Lent and these King Cake Donuts are a perfect way to celebrate the Mardi Gras season.  While the real tradition is a cake (which is actually a yeast sweet bread), homemade baked donuts are easier to make and we all know everyone loves donuts, right?  There is still plenty of time to bake this sweet treat and I'm sharing this recipe for my monthly post at Real Housemoms.
