Fan Favorites 2015

2015 Fan Favorites | Cooking on the Front Burner

It's my favorite time of the year where I look back and see what recipes YOU found tops for each month of 2015.  So today's post is all about the fans!  It really gives me an idea of what kind of recipes you might be looking for seasonally, and I have to admit, these are some of my favorites as well.  Sweet won out over savory but that is probably due to me not making as many savory dishes in 2015.  In 2016 I plan to bring a wider variety of dishes and would love for you to leave a comment for suggestions.

25 Holiday Cookie Favorites!

25 Holiday Cookies for your eating pleasure!!

Confession time- I'm a bit behind on my baking this year.  Sad but true.  But I have gotten most other things done and let's see what I can check off my list - shopping done (check), wrapping done (check), decorating done (check), menus planned (check) - so I think I'm doing pretty good!  There is still plenty some time left to put on an apron, heat up the oven, pull out the flour, sugar and other ingredients, turn on some tunes and whip up a couple batches of cookies.  I was looking around at some of my friends' recipes and now have some good ideas and new recipes to try.  I can see why these are some of their favorites.  If you are in the same boat as me, I invite you to take a look at these 25 holiday cookie favorites.  While you do that, you'll find me in the kitchen!

Minty Brownie Bites

Minty Brownie Bites | Cooking on the Front Burner

Did you know that December 8th was National Brownie day?  I'm a bit late with the celebration but any day can be brownie day, right?  I was sent a bottle of BrancaMenta  from a company and asked to create a brownie recipe using the product.  I was intrigued when I heard it was mint flavored and thought I would create a holiday-ish type recipe and came up with these Minty Brownie Bites.  They were fun to make and would be perfect for your holiday celebration.  All opinions in this post are mine.

Butterscotch White Russian

Kick your holidays up a notch with this perfect after dinner drink of a Butterscotch White Russian.

Butterscotch White Russian | Cooking on the Front Burner

Happy December 1st where I'm starting off the month with a holiday cocktail that makes the perfect after dinner drink.  Tis the season for entertaining, though you don't need an excuse to have company to make this Butterscotch White Russian.  I've made these a a couple times now - once after we went out with some friends for dinner and had them back to our place for dessert and drinks.  And the other was with the family on Thanksgiving day.  We had finished dinner, cleaned up and ready to start looking at the black Friday ads. It also was a pretty day as it was snowing a bit and this cocktail seemed like the perfect mid-afternoon drink as we were ad looking  I'm not really a black Friday shopper unless I go out at 6 PM (not AM) and even then I feel like there is not much I'm missing that I can't pick up at a later time.  But it is certainly fun to start getting ideas and getting everyone to make their lists all while having a tasty beverage.

Orange Cranberry Biscotti

Just what you need with your coffee or tea! Enjoy these cranberry and orange biscotti today!  Especially tasty with a drizzle of white chocolate.

Oh boy, the holidays are in full force now - Thanksgiving is tomorrow and the countdown to Christmas begins. Lights, camera, action!  I'm getting pretty excited and, I'm not sure about you, but I really need to get my head in gear and starting thinking of what to buy folks, decorate (but waiting until AFTER turkey day) and of course cooking/baking.  So as I'm making my list and checking it twice, I'm going to be snacking on these Orange Cranberry Biscotti.  I love biscotti - they are crunchy and are great with coffee, tea or hot chocolate.  Orange and cranberries go perfect together and note the drizzle of white chocolate (because everything is better with it!).  Keep biscotti on hand for your own enjoyment or invite a friend over to sit and relax during these busy times.

Apple Crisp Cheesecake

Apple Crisp Cheesecake | Cooking on the Front Burner

This year has been apple-mania at our house!  With 3 tubs full of fresh, juicy apples we've been trying them in all sorts of recipes.  Usually on Sunday the DIY Guy makes us an apple crisp dessert which on it's own is fantastic and a treat that I really look forward to.  But what do you think of using the crispy, crumbly topping on a creamy cheesecake - oh yeah that kicks it up a notch!  Today I'm sharing my Apple Crisp Cheesecake over at Real Housemoms for my monthly post.  So if you like apple crisp and cheesecake, this is a match made in heaven!

2015 Christmas Cookie Recipe Swap

2015 Christmas Cookie Recipe Swap

So you are probably thinking why are we talking about Christmas now.  Well there are only 6 weekends until the big day!  Hope that doesn't  freak you out, it does me a bit!  But the real reason for the early shout-out is a fun event that is happening with other bloggers (yes, you!).  For the past three years I have participated in this Christmas Cookie Recipe Swap and this year I'm co-hosting.  What I have loved about the swap is you are partnered up with another blogger and recipes are exchanged - not the actual cookies.  Easy and no broken cookies!

Southwest Chicken Quinoa Soup

Southwest Chicken Quinoa Soup | Cooking on the Front Burner

Fall is here and in our neck of the woods, it is soup weather.  While I certainly enjoy the summer months and the grilling out we get to do, when fall arrives I'm ready for some hearty soups.  This month I'm sharing a new recipe called Southwest Chicken Quinoa Soup over at Real Housemoms.  You'll be sure to want to add this one to your menu.  It has great southwest flavors and comes together in about 35 minutes.  How is that for getting dinner on the table?

Butternut Squash Orzo Salad

Butternut Squash Orzo Salad with Maple Vinaigrette | Cooking on the Front Burner

The holidays are coming where I'm pretty sure I'll be indulging a bit more into sweets and other higher calorie food.  I'll be trying to balance it out with some healthier type foods and that is where this Butternut Squash Orzo Salad with Maple Vinaigrette comes into play.  It's a light and refreshing salad perfect for lunch or as a side dish.  Butternut squash is so available right now that it's fun to come up with new recipes for the palate!  What's not to love with fresh spinach, orzo, craisins, roasted squash, tangy gorgonzola and topped with a creamy maple vinaigrette.  It's quickly becoming one of my fall favorites.

Pumpkin Energy Bites

No Bake Pumpkin Chia Energy Bites | Cooking on the Front Burner

Recently I made pumpkin gnocchi and had a bit of pumpkin left over.  I put the small amount in the refrigerator with the mindset that it would probably remain there until it got fuzzy and I had to throw it away (you can probably relate, right?).  But as I started looking around in my pantry and cupboards, I got an idea of making energy bites.  I had enough different ingredients that I thought would work, and lo and behold, this Pumpkin Energy Bite was created.

Sure, I've had some but have never given them a try.  So this month I brought to the show these Pumpkin Gnocchi in a Brown Butter Sauce topped with crispy sage. Perfect for the fall or any time!

Maple Glazed Spiced Donuts

Maple Glazed Spiced Donut | Cooking on the Front Burner

What's your thoughts on donuts?  Do you like baked or fried?  Regular size or mini? Are you a Kripsy Kreme kind of person or Dunkin Donuts?  Or maybe you have a favorite local brand to enjoy.  Donuts have been one of favorite things to eat and my all time favorite is just a plain glazed donut that is light and airy on the inside with the right amount of sugary glaze.  So you may have noticed that this isn't one of those!  Today I'm branching out with this spiced donut with the best maple glaze.  In fact, I think the glaze is the best part.  It's all about that bass glaze... :)

Pink for a Cure - Cream Puffs

Cream Puffs with Strawberry Mousse | Cooking on the Front Burner

Yes, it's fall and we all have apples and pumpkins on our minds but today some bloggers are taking a break from fall recipes to participate in #cookingforacure and bringing awareness to October's Breast Cancer Awareness month.  So in honor of this great cause, pink food all around including these cream puffs with strawberry mousse.

I was glad to be asked to participate this year and help get the word out about what you can do to help yourself and bring awareness to this disease.  One in eight women are affected each year and that is a high number - I'm sure many of us have been affected by friends or family that may have been diagnosed.  Early detection is key by doing monthly self examines and yearly check-ups.  If it is caught in the early stages, the survival rate is 98%!  And that is a high number of good news!

Clam Bake 2015

How to plan a clambake | Cooking on the Front Burner

When it's Labor Day that means one thing.  Clam bake party time!  The DIY Guy and I look forward to this gathering that our friends have been hosting for over 20 years.  It's a wonderful way to end the summer, enjoy good eats and catch up with friends.   The excitement starts when we get the email invite asking us how many dozen clams and how many "bakes" we want.  Then on my part, I go into dessert planning mode and start researching what to bring.  I kind of put pressure on myself to come up with a wow-ey dessert and this year I went with a four layer lemon cake with lemon curd.  Oh yeah, you know I love my lemons!  I spent about 5 hours total prep time and I think half the time was squeezing lemons because when life gives you 3 bags of lemons you need to come up with something spectacular!

Fresh Fig Pizza with Arugula

Fresh Fig Pizza with Arugula | Cooking on the Front Burner

I'm back today with the second of the fig recipes I tried this week and this one (at least for me) hit it out of the park!  Fresh Fig Pizza with Arugula lives up to the hype.  I originally had thought we would have this as an appetizer to our main course, but once we started, we decided what the heck and called it dinner.  I know the DIY Guy had his heart set on meat but even he agreed that this pizza was great and we could grill out the next night.  What a guy! (And we did!)

Bacon Wrapped Fig Appetizers

Bacon Wrapped Fig Appetizers

Have you ever had figs?  I've had them in fig newtons but I guess that doesn't count!  I mean the fresh ones.  Last week I was shopping at our local Trader Joe's and saw some in the produce area.  I've been really intrigued with all the recipes I've seen around the web lately and decided to give them a try.  I was able to find two recipes that sounded good so first up I'm sharing these easy to make Bacon Wrapped Fig Appetizers.  If you love sweet and salty, these are for you!  And of course anything with bacon is A-OK in my eyes.

Homemade Tomato Basil Soup

Homemade Tomato Basil Soup | Cooking on the Front Burner

Today's recipe is courtesy of our local Farmer's Market. On Saturday I grabbed my market bag and had a wonderful time stopping at different vendors getting what I needed for this Tomato Basil Soup.  I like to meander around with coffee in hand, enjoy the sights and especially the smells!  By the time I was done, I had a bag full of roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, garlic, an onion bigger than a softball (for only $1),  basil and a red pepper.  The ride home provided a nice basil aroma (I would take that any day over the 'new' car smell!)

Fresh Cherry Crisp

Fresh Cherry Crisp a la mode | Cooking on the Front Burner

I love this time of year when cherries are available!  It reminds me when I was a kid and we would go to my grandmother's house and go "down the yard" and pick cherries at the neighbors house.  I was able to pick the low lying ones and my uncles would place ladders against the tree to get the majority.  My tongue would be bright red by the end of the afternoon and hopefully I didn't get a stomach ache!  In memory of those great times, I created this fresh cherry crisp for you to enjoy.

Mint Chip Fudge Ice Cream

Mint Chocolate Chip Fudge Ice Cream | Cooking on the Front Burner

Summer and ice cream go together like PB&J, mac-n-cheese and well, you get the idea.  Mint Chocolate Chip with Fudge happens to be my favorite flavor (at least this summer!)  We have a local shop called Flapdoodles that the DIY Guy and I have been known to frequent every couple weeks.  He'll try different flavors like Salty Caramel and Coffee Chip.  I keep going back to the mint and thought it was time to try and make my own.

Banana Bread (Loaded!)

Banana Bread loaded with goodies | Cooking on the Front Burner

It's a first!  I've never in my life made banana bread.  I like it, I really do but I guess I prefer when others make it for me!  I decided to take the plunge when I had two very ripe bananas sitting in the basket.  I've had black bananas before and have had no guilt tossing them out but this time, they seemed to be calling my name.  P-l-e-a-s-e use us and so I did.  And not only did I use them, but I invited some friends to join in - chocolate, nuts, dried cherries and blueberries.  Now that's a banana bread!

Oatmeal Cookies Red, White & Blue

Fruity Oatmeal Cookies | Cookie on the Front Burner

Oatmeal cookies happen to be one of the DIY Guy's favorite.  Me, well, I'm more of a chocolate chip cookie kind of gal.  But this past weekend was all about the dad's (right!) so I wanted to make him something to enjoy over the weekend.  I've tried different mix-ins before like pecans, coconut and of course chocolate, but these are definitely more on the fruity side with dried cherries, dried blueberries and white chocolate chunks.  A bit on the patriotic side and a lot on flavor!

Moscow Mule Popsicles

Moscow Mule Popsicle | Cooking on the Front Burner

Have you heard of a Moscow Mule cocktail?  This drink has been around since 1939 but has recently gained a lot of popularity.  I'm seeing them more on restaurant menus and up until a couple weeks ago, I hadn't had one.  I was really curious since the main mixer is ginger beer (not ale).  The ginger beer has a bit of a kick to it and with the rest of the mixings (lime and vodka), this drink is quite refreshing and perfect for a hot summer day.  Typically they are served in a copper mug that keeps your drink cold from first sip to last.  And making them into a frozen treat can really cool you down!
