Hope as the time is winding down to the holidays that you are getting what you need to get done - done!  I'm spending this weekend working on food by making homemade raviolis and sauce that we have on Christmas Day  I also need to make some cookies and truffles.  We also are enjoying the season by getting in some play time!  Last weekend we went to see A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.  It was fantastic and we also had a great meal at Bar La Grassa.  Shopping is totally done and everything is wrapped.  I can't wait until granddaughter Emily arrives!

Happy cookie day!  For the third year in a row I'm participating in a Cookie Recipe Swap - no mailing cookies just a recipe (easy peasy).  This year I was paired with the host of the party, and a good blogging friend of mine, Julie from White Lights on Wednesday.  Julie sent me this recipe called Chocolate Espresso Coins.  I was really intrigued and couldn't wait to get a baking!

It's time for Best of the Weekend!  We are so glad you have joined us and looking forward to seeing what you have for us this week.  Speaking of the week, is it me or is time just going so fast?  I'm trying to get all my shopping and wrapping done by the end of this weekend so I can focus on food next.  I also need to get some posts ready for next week.  I'm participating in the Great Blogger Cookie Swap for Cookies for Cancer and that will be live on Monday.  Be sure to stop by to see what cookies I received and what I made for the bloggers I was assigned to.  It's a great cause and just waiting to see how much money we raised this year.

Orange Candied Cranberries

How to make candied cranberries for a snack or garnish | Cooking on the Front Burner

Tis the season for cranberries - whether you like them fresh or as craisins, they are easy to find now so get them while you can!  I decided to make these Orange Candied Cranberries for a couple reasons.  Last Christmas Eve my friend brought these to our annual feast and I really liked them a lot.  Sweet and tangy at the same time!  So this year as I was making some cranberry recipes (post coming soon), I had some leftover and decided to whip up a batch myself.

Sweet and Salty Bark

Sweet and Salty White Bark | Cooking on the Front Burner

Today's a first for me.  I've never made a bark recipe and now I don't know what I was waiting for!  Not only is this so simple - 4 ingredients - but from start to taking a bite is about 30 minutes.  While I opted to go with autumn type flavors, the sky is the limit on what you can add to make it your own.

We are getting into the final countdown before turkey day.  Are you ready???  I used to always host Thanksgiving with just our immediate family and made everything - it took me a few years to figure out how to make good gravy but other than that I had it down to a science to what time what goes in with my list (I'm such a list person!)  The last couple of years though we have been invited to our daughter's in Minneapolis and her and her husband have taken over making most of the food.  I bring pumpkin soup and a pumpkin pie.  I like it!  Then if I'm lucky I can convince the DIY GUY to stop at Crate & Barrel on Friday before we head home....

Pumpkin Spice Cake

The best pumpkin spice cake with a white chocolate cream cheese frosting | Cooking on the Front Burner

One of my favorite things to do on my work break is to walk to Barnes & Noble.  It is housed in a historic building downtown that used to be a movie theater - it is just so cool looking with the domed high ceilings with some twinkle lights and a fun place to walk around to look at books, magazines and maybe get a Starbucks coffee.  So where I am going with this is I tend to check out the latest food magazines from time to time and the new one from Cuisine Holiday caught my eye with desserts and cookies.  I just bought it with no real plan but then it turned out I needed a dessert for Saturday night so I tried this Pumpkin Spice Cake.

Butternut Squash and Apple Soup

Butternut Squash Apple Soup | Cooking on the Front Burner

I've had soup on the mind a lot, it could be because for this past week we've had to deal with snow, cold, wind, slush and did I mention c-o-l-d weather!  Yikes, it may not even be Thanksgiving yet, but I think the snow is here to stay with that lovely Polar Vortex.  So this Butternut Squash Apple Soup is one you might want to try to keep warm!

Have apples? Then make these easy apple hand pies with a bit of caramel | Cooking on the Front Burner

Well, we still have about a bushel full of apples that I've been trying to use up - I've made pies, apple cake, crisps, risotto and for today these Apple Hand Pies!  I mean what's a girl to do with all these fresh apples.  I think we loaded up our family and friends as much as they were able to use, so now we are coming into the home stretch and I really don't want to throw any away.

Apple Walnut Cake

Apple Walnut Cake | Cooking on the Front Burner

Well, we are off to another start of a week.  I don't know about you but the weekend went really fast.  I was able to spend time with friends including seeing a play on Thursday night called the Heidi Chronicles in Minneapolis.  It was my belated birthday event with two of my close friends, then caught up with another friend Friday night and Saturday went out with the DIY Guy's fishing buddy and his wife for an "appetizer only" dinner at a local bar and grill.  Afterwards we went back to their place for this Apple Walnut Cake (see my story was going somewhere!)

The best creamy risotto made with apples, bacon and a hint of thyme.

Apple, Bacon and Thyme Risotto | Cooking on the Front Burner

It's apple season around our yard (only one tree and about 200+ Regent apples!) and I been asked by the DIY Guy to start using them up.  We've made crisps and pies but I really wanted to try them in a savory recipe.  Risotto happens to be one of my favorite side dishes.  I use to be intimidated by the directions and all that stirring, but the time goes quick and then you are left with this creamy and flavorful dish - the perfect comfort food!

Best of the Weekend and Game Day Food

Stay Connected with Cooking on the Front Burner

Welcome to the first Friday in October and Best of the Weekend!  Let me just say it feels really good to be back home and blogging.  Last week at this time I was in NY and was saying goodbye to my dad.  Earlier that week we had moved him to a senior apartment and then spent all week getting his house ready to put on the market.  I'm not sure of any of you have had to deal with an elderly parent but it is physically and emotionally draining.  The good news he is in a better living situation and seems to be adjusting well...whew!
