Fat Tuesday

As promised...here is a tradition that I grew up with on Fat Tuesday (eve of Lent).  Growing up we were encouraged to "give something up" during the 40 days of Lent.  So tradition has it that the night before, you can splurge-eat, drink and be merry.  My mom and her mom (Nonni) made these every year and these were the only time of the year they were made.
Here is the recipe in my mom's handwriting "Castonioli or Honey Balls":
 The ingredients:
After mixing the ingredients, the dough is sticky:

Drop about a rounded tablespoon into hot that has been heated over medium-high heat - have to make sure the oil isn't too hot or they will cook too quickly and not be done in the middle.  They flip themselves and keep cooking until golden brown

Put in bowl and drizzle honey all over:

Oh and these are 5++ stars!  Until next year!

  1. I'm just a little disappointed I wasn't invited for a taste test :) They look amazing. Mr. D would say...."anything that is fried has to be good."

  2. Deb,
Thanks for stopping by Bakewell Junction. Your honey balls look delicious. They are a lot bigger than Struffoli and remind me of Zeppoli but somehow different. A great addition to any Italian's recipe box.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I appreciate you stopping by! Have a great day!
